Guest Blogger: End of Year Graduation

…June 29, 2011

I’ve known that date for the past 10 months – known the approximate date for the past 10 years. But just because I’ve known it was coming doesn’t make it any less disheartening.

High school graduation. The day where the 250 kids in my class don royal blue gowns and matching tasselled caps, sit in a crowded, freezing gym for two hours, and listen to speeches and awards presentations. In its description it’s just a long evening dressed up in funny hats, but to me it seems like the end of an era.

Okay, so maybe that’s a bit melodramatic, but I’m sad to be graduating! As much as I want to get my first year of university done with, I wish I was staying for a fifth year of high school. Some of my friends have the complete opposite attitude, and can’t wait to get out of school and away from home, but I’m content with the way things are now.

You hear adults talking about how they would never want to have to re-live their high school days, but I don’t see why. Sure, grades 9 and 10 weren’t very exciting, but grades 11 and 12 have been and continue to be fantastic. It’s nice to know most of the people in your grade, to have a group of friends in every class, to be trusted and known by teachers, and to be on the top of your game with extra-curriculars. I love school, I don’t want to leave!

In some ways I’m excited to be heading off to university, but as June creeps closer, I’m realizing how much I’m going to miss high school. The year has flown by – I swear it was just November. But now it’s May, final projects are coming due, prom tickets are being sold, and I just handed in a cheque for a royal blue gown rental.

51 days…

Hey Rachel! I know what you mean about high school – I loved it! It was a great time in my life, though I’m not sure I’d go to a 15 year reunion next year if there was one.

I don’t know how I would have felt having to leave after four years, but when I was going to high school in Ontario we still still had OAC (grade 13) and while leading up to the end I didn’t want to go, but when the end came I found that I was ready, that it was time. Hopefully over the next 51 days you’ll be ready too!
