Girl Guides of Canada believes that by raising awareness and advocating for gender equality, girls can truly change our world. That’s why we launched the 2011 National Service Project: EmPOWERing Girls – a project that recognizes the power that Canadian girls have to impact their communities, and to change the world around them.
To help Guiding Units understand the reality of girls and women in Canada and around the world GGC has partnered with Plan Canada and endorsed Because I am a Girl – a social movement that harnesses the incredible power that girls and women have to change the future. Plan Canada and GGC believe that when a girl is educated, nourished and protected, she shares her knowledge and skills with her family and community, and can forever change the future of a nation. Girls are that powerful!
Since February, Guides across Canada have been learning about this movement, planning and carrying out their own service projects – taking action on issues of girl empowerment.
Here’s what some Units are doing:
- The 1st Fahler Brownies checked out the Girl Effect video on the Because I am a Girl website and learned about barriers facing girls in different countries. Then they signed the e-petition advocating for a Day of the Girl!
- The 11th Burlington Guides learned about how important education is for girls all around the world and how in some places it is very difficult for girls to go to school. The girls are now convinced that although sometimes they don’t want to go to school, that it is a great privilege!
- After learning about female heroes and role-models around the world the girls of the 1st St. Catharine’s Guide Unit spent time learning about and discussing the women that are heroes in their own lives and also signed Plan Canada’s e-petition.

- September – Girls and Women around the world
- October – Women in careers and Women’s Rights
- November – Bullying Awareness
- December – Healthy Relationships
